The purchase

I'm writing this blog about my experiences in modifying and cafe-racing a 1975 Yamaha RD 350B. For me it was an interesting journey which i want to write down for myself and share with any one who wants to know. I hope to share some insight in why and how things came to be on this bike as they are. Also how you can replicate them if you would even want that. I started this project in 2017 and to this day it still is not finished. But i have made enough progress to share with you all and hopefully it will be an interesting read.

So in June I Bought an RD350B from a be-friended motor cycle shop.

I spotted this bike several months earlier, and it wasn't for sale (jet).
There several reasons for me to buy this bike:

  • I like the cafe-racer aesthetics (the hump seat, and low bars)
  • I really like that's a 2-stroke twin with reasonable power to weight ratio
  • It was need of TLC
  • There is a link between my father and this type of bike, he spoke highly of these RD's
  • And due to an unfortunate experience in my life at that time i needed to occupy my time

So when i was able go for a test ride i was quickly sold. Mainly the drive ability was better than i anticipated. If the bike was running on the choke it really took off above 6K RPM. It steered nimble and light and i didn't need much brakes when i arrived at an corner. Which was a save in itself as the front brake did not seem to slow the bike down. The rear brake did a slightly better job.
On outside i was attracted to the "patina" of the bike the mild rust on the chrome. The only real thing that repelled me was that there were several cooling fins missing form the ignition-side cylinder.

So a deal was made quickly, i emptied my pocket and loaded the bike up in my van.

And plans started to brew inside my mind, these i will save for my next post.
